Screen Singapore 2011 Glittery Updates

If you think the weather on Red Dot Island has been hot lately, things are just going to get HOTTER!

Screen Singapore, the first international film event held on Red Dot Island, will finally kick off this coming weekend at Capella Sentosa on June 5th. The glitzy event will run for a week till June 12th.

Organized and funded by Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), there will be a trade exhibition, seminars, workshops for industry and professional folks, and exclusive red-carpet premieres for various Asian and Western mainstream films.

Set to walk down the red-carpet for their respective World, International or Asia-Pacific premieres are some of the hottest stars in Asia.

Red Dot Diva has received news that the opening night for the event will be a Chinese film, a thriller entitled "The Devil Inside of Me" starring Tony Leung Ka-Fai and Kelly Lin. During that night, several Chinese celebrities like director Gordon Chan, and stars Colin Chou, Liu Yan, Zheng Shuang, Xie Nan and Bao Bei-Er will walk the red carpet to present some scenes from their upcoming movie, "The Mural".

Tang Wei
Controversial but beautiful Tang Wei (infamous for her nude scenes in "Lust, Caution"), will also grace the red-carpet the same night with director Jingle Ma. Personally, Tang Wei is someone whom Red Dot Diva would be curious to meet in person. Both Tang Wei and Jingle Ma will be at the event to show some footage from their film "Speed Angel".

There is also a French film called "The Assault" which will have its International premiere during Screen Singapore. Anddirector Julien Leclercq and actress Melanie Bernier will both be present for the red-carpet gala. And for HK-made wuxia-comedy film "Treasure Inn", director Wong Jing, actors Nick Cheung, Huang Yi and Liu Yang will be making red-carpet appearances.

Bollywood fans will be eager to start screaming for superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who will be at the event to promote the very expensive "Ra.One". Actress Asin will also be on the island to celebrate the World premiere of the movie "Ready".

Japanese actress Aya Omasa and singing celebrity May'n will grace the red-carpet for the International premieres of their movies "Paradise Kiss" and "May'n The Movie - Phonic Nation" respectively.

There is a Hollywood night where a couple of blockbuster movies will be showing - "Mr Popper's Penguins" starring Jim Carrey and the well-anticipated scifi thriller by J.J. Abrams, "Super 8".

And of course, there will be a night to celebrate Made In Singapore films! Award-winning local director, Yong Munchee will showcase "Where the Road Meets the Sun" together with actors Fernando Noriega, Laura Ramsey and Luke Brandon Field at the Asia-Pacific premiere held on Friday, June 10th. For the family comedy film "Jesus Henry Christ", actor Jason Spevack, director and writer Dennis Lee and Singapore producer Sukee Chew will all attend the International red-carpet premiere

To wrap it all up with even more glitter, Oscar-award winning Tom Hanks will descend on Red Dot Island on June 11th for the Asia-Pacific premiere of rom-com "Larry Crowne", which also stars Julia Roberts. Directed and co-written by Tom Hanks, the movie will be the closing film of the event. Joining him for the red-carpet occasion is Korean man-wich, Lee Byung Hun (**insert squees from female Korean movie fans**).

It was also announced that cutie Archie Kao from the popular TV series "CSI" will be present for Screen Singapore. Although Red Dot Diva is not entirely sure where or when Archie will be making his appearance. In any case, since she has managed to get a media pass for Screen Singapore (thank you @doubleshiny and @endofshow!), she will try to stalk him during the event!

Movie premieres are just part of the events happening during Screen Singapore. One of the keynote "In Conversation" panels will be hosted by Hollywood producer Jon Landau ("Avatar") and Yu Dong (film producer and CEO of Bona Film Group). The panel held on Monday, June 6th is titled "Defining a Business Case for 3D Film in Asia".

There will also be the Asian Short Film Awards running in conjunction with Screen Singapore. Film-maker Oliver Stone had earlier been announced as heading the jury for selecting the winner of this award. The awards attracted 90 films from 15 countries and the 20 finalists have already been chosen by the jury.

For those non-industry folks who are eager to catch some sneak previews, there will be plenty of movies to choose from! These previews will be held at Golden Village, Cathay and Shaw theatres and include "The City of Your Final Destination" (UK) starring Anthony Hopkins, "A Beautiful Life" (China), starring Shu Qi and Liu Ye, "Haunters" (Korea) starring Ko Soo and Kang Dong Won, and many many more. One can check out the pretty long list here!!

With so much glamour happening in the coming week, Red Dot Diva hopes to be able to capture some more  interesting news (as well as man-wiches) from Screen Singapore. So, do check out End of Show or Red Dot Diva blogs for more posts and pics!
