STGCC 2012: Pre-Convention Geekout Begins Thursday!

Just barely three days away, and there will be the biggest East-West pop-culture geek fest of the year in Red Dot Island!

The Singapore Toy, Games and Comic Convention (STGCC) will kick-off this year at Hall B & C, Level 1, Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands this weekend. Online sales have closed but you still can get tickets onsite from 8am to 7.30pm.

As the fans, gamers, cosplayers, collectors and all-round geeks get ready for the convention, some of the guests from far away lands are making their way or are already here on our island - where it's hot, humid and ...quite rainy, of late.

While this blog is being typed, writer Andy Diggle is on his way here from the UK via Doha, flying in swanky business class.

Marvel artist Mark Brooks has already arrived on our shores after a 32-hour epic journey yesterday. After a much needed rest, Mark and his wife were promptly shown around the island by fellow artist, STGCC guest and frequent island visitor Leinil Yu. Thing is, Leinil did not introduce them to partake some of the seafood that our island is famous for. Instead, he took them to a spa to be fish food!

Mark Brooks Signing/ Meet and Greet

And Mark Brooks fans, here's a heads up from Red Dot Diva!

There's a good chance for fans to catch Mark Brooks before the STGCC craziness begins.

Just head down to Invasion Toys & Collectibles store at 5th level, Funan DigitaMall

Date: 30th August, Thursday
Time: 6pm to 8pm
Autographs: Limited to 3 items and no requests for sketches due to the time constraints.

Mark's limited edition art book "Groundworks - The Marvel Art of Mark Brooks" will also be available at the store. So, better be there early if you want a copy!

Illegal Gathering at Flabslab
On the same night, in the Western part of the Red Dot Island is an .... *looks shiftily around* ... "Illegal Gathering" by the gang of Vinyl On Vinyl, Mighty Jaxx and 8-Bit Media.

This get-together of artistic proportions is taking place at Flabslab, an art and design gallery located at One Commonwealth.

Go party and hang out with artists like Martin Hsu, Clogtwo, Phu, Mark Torres and Wendy Chew while admiring their works of art, including those by frontman of the assemble, Gabby Tiongson.

And who knows who else might turn up to rock it up and get down wid it.

GnB Members' Party/ Gilamon Studio Launch Party
If that's not enough pre-convention partying on Thursday, members of GnB Comics can continue with the fun and festivities on 31 August, Friday night, starting from 7 pm!

To the glee of many local comic fans, GnB Comics returns to STGCC this year as a joint exhibitor with Diamond Comic Distributors. Guests like Gilamon Studio, Sheldon Goh, Noval Hernawan and Ario Anandito will be making guest appearances at the booth during the weekend.

Indonesia-based artist, Ario Anandito has done a variety of work including TV commercials, novel illustrations, comic books and magazine covers! Recently, he was a penciller for a backup story in DC Comic's "Red Hood and The Outlaw".

Sheldon Goh, a Malaysian artist, has worked with Zenescope Comics and has also done storyboards for animated TV shows and commercials. He is one of the artists in an artbook called "Drawlaahhh:Vol 1", which will be launched during STGCC at the Diamond/ GnB booth!

Locally-based artist acquaintance Noval Hernawan works on Rittenhouses' MARVEL sketch cards. They are really lovely, and Red Dot Diva recommends you get them during the convention!

It seems that the night's celebrities is also a launch party for Gilamon Studio's latest offerings, including "Zero Hero" and "Jimi Germ". Both graphic novels were previewed at the recent San Diego Comic-Con! The Gilamon Studio artists are also the contributors in the "Drawlaahhh:Vol 1" artbook.

Check out the artbook's teaser trailer here:

Red Dot Diva has met the "Gilamon boys" a few times before and she thinks they are a friendly, loveable and uberly-talented bunch. She recommends that comic fans check out their original graphic novels during the convention.

So much outright geeky fun to be had. Even before the convention begins!

EXCITING, right??!!!
